DA rejects charges against sheriff’s deputy in cyclist’s death

The district attorney’s office has declined to file charges against a Los Angeles County sheriff’s deputy who was operating his patrol car’s computer when he struck and killed a cyclist last year. The office explained its decision in a memo, saying that state law exempted emergency services employees from laws that ban the use of electronic equipment while driving if they are engaged in official business.
