L.A. Sheriff appeals ruling that deputy accused of lying about jail beating should keep his job

Los Angeles County Sher­iff’s Deputy Mark Mon­tez is one of sev­er­al depu­ties who were found to have made false state­ments but kept their jobs. The county’s Civil Ser­vice Com­mis­sion re­in­stated Mon­tez des­pite con­clud­ing that he lied when he told in­vest­ig­at­ors he did not see or hear an­oth­er deputy as­sault an in­mate. The sher­iff has chal­lenged the com­mis­sion’s de­cision in court.
