LAPD report on death of Jorge Azucena

A Los Angeles Po­lice De­part­ment re­port ob­tained this week by The Times un­der the state’s pub­lic re­cords act provides new de­tails on the events that led to the death of Jorge Azu­cena while in po­lice cus­tody in Septem­ber 2013. Fol­low­ing his ar­rest after lead­ing po­lice on a car chase, Azu­cena re­peatedly com­plained that he could not breathe and was suf­fer­ing from asthma, but his re­quests for med­ic­al at­ten­tion were ig­nored by of­ficers, ac­cord­ing to the re­port. Azu­cena, 26, died in an LAPD sta­tion jail cell. Cor­on­er’s of­fi­cials have con­cluded that his death was likely caused by an asthma at­tack.
