Deputy who admits making false reports may keep his job

The Los Angeles County Civil Service Commission reinstated Deputy Daniel Genao even after the deputy pleaded no contest to writing a false report. Genao — who wrote that he found a gun on a man he arrested when the weapon was actually recovered behind a nearby planter — insisted he did not intentionally lie but was stressed and confused after the encounter. A commission hearing officer concluded that dismissal was excessive because Genao admitted to the false statement and could work a non-patrol assignment. The Sheriff’s Department is challenging the decision in court.
