Federal judge orders Arizona to recognize out-of-state same-sex marriage

A federal judge in Arizona has ordered the state to recognize the marriage of a same-sex couple who wed in California earlier this year. Fred McQuire married George Martinez in July, but Martinez died of a terminal illness. Friday’s ruling forces Arizona officials to recognize McQuire as his spouse, but the state’s ban on same-sex marriages remains in tact.
