Berkeley Building and Safety Division staff recommendation on balcony collapse

City staffers say they will re­com­mend that the Berke­ley coun­cil pass strict re­quire­ments on wa­ter­proof­ing new bal­conies and oth­er sealed areas ex­posed to weath­er, as well as in­spect­ing them. The move comes after a deadly col­lapse that killed six people in the Bay Area city.
